Custom weapon sounds with CodeWalker

GTA's sounds sit in encrypted archives in the game folder. With CodeWalker you take the sound file out, in the sound editor you replace the sounds, and with CodeWalker you put it back. Only you hear the sounds, on your own computer.

Keep a copy first

Copy RESIDENT.rpf and WEAPONS_PLAYER.rpf in the GTA folder x64/audio/sfx before you change anything. Then you can always put the game's sounds back.

1. Take out the .awc file

  1. Open the archive in CodeWalker's RPF Explorer. The weapon sounds, the headshot sound and the footsteps sit in WEAPONS_PLAYER.rpf and RESIDENT.rpf, and the sound editor shows which file belongs to which weapon.

  2. Right-click the .awc file and choose Extract Uncompressed. With Extract Raw, files that are encrypted in the archive come out locked.

2. Replace the sounds in the sound editor

  1. Drag the .awc file into the sound editor.

  2. Drop an MP3, WAV, OGG or M4A on the weapon's card. The sound goes into every sound the card stands for, and you can fine-tune volume, pitch and length.

  3. Press Save. Pack health checks the sounds, and you download the changed .awc file with the same name.

3. Put the file back

  1. Turn on Edit mode in CodeWalker.

  2. Drag the new file over the old one with the same name.

  3. Start FiveM and listen.

Good to know

On Windows, the program ModFiveM for your computer can take the files out and put them back for you, with a backup, for the files it reaches.

Who hears the sounds?

Only you. The sounds are replaced in the game's files on your own computer. Servers with sv_pureLevel 2 allow no changed sound files, so check the server's rules first.
