ModFiveM for your computer
ModFiveM for your computer is a free Windows program that reads the game’s sound files straight out of the archives, hands them to the sound editor in your browser and puts the changed ones back, with backups. It replaces the CodeWalker steps for the files it can reach.
Install the program
Get the installer from the download page, or the portable exe, which needs no installing. Both are for Windows 10 and 11.
Run the file. The installer is per user and needs no admin. The program starts, finds GTA V by itself through Epic Games, Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher, and shows the folder, the two archives’ state, the pairing code and the log.
If it does not find the game, press Change folder and choose the folder holding GTA5.exe and x64\audio\sfx.
Warning
The file is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC" the first time. Choose More info and then Run anyway. That goes away once the build is signed.
Pair with the sound editor
Open the sound editor on the site with the program running.
The chip in the top bar says Pair with the program, The program is not running, found, not paired or found, paired. Press it.
Type the port and the code shown in the program’s window and press Pair. Five wrong codes draw a new code.
The pairing is kept in the browser, so you do it once per browser. The program and the site talk to each other on your computer only, at 127.0.0.1, and only pages from modfivem.com are let in.
Put a sound back into the game
Once the chip says paired, pressing it opens the dialog The game’s sound files: both archives, the files the program reaches with their names, and the locked ones greyed out. Press Open on a file and it opens in the editor like a dropped file.
Change the sounds as usual: drop a WAV on the card, fine-tune or silence.
Press Put back into the game in Fine-tune under Whole file, or in the dialog under Changed files from the game. The site builds the file and checks its length, the program takes a copy of the archive and writes the file into its slot.
Start FiveM, not the Rockstar Games Launcher, and listen.
Good to know
If the file came out longer than its slot in the archive, the editor says how many bytes too many. Cut the sound with Cut to the game’s length or shorten it and try again.
Restore the original
Press Restore original in the program’s window or in the dialog The game’s sound files. The program puts back the copy it took before the first change and checks that it matches.
The program writes to two of the game’s files only, x64\audio\sfx\WEAPONS_PLAYER.rpf and RESIDENT.rpf. The original copy lies beside the archive with .modfivem-original at the end, and a dated copy from before every write in the program’s own folder under AppData.
What the program cannot do
A new sound may not be longer than the original’s slot in the archive. The same length or shorter always fits.
Ten files in RESIDENT.rpf are stored encrypted inside the archive and cannot be reached: ambience, doors, explosions, frontend, melee and a few more. Every weapon sound in WEAPONS_PLAYER.rpf can.
The changes apply to your own computer only. Servers with sv_pureLevel 2 refuse changed client files.
The Rockstar Games Launcher may restore changed files when Story Mode starts. FiveM does not.
Never play GTA Online with changed files. Restore the originals first.
The program is for Windows 10 and 11 only.
