Textures and FiveM limits

FiveM warns about files that take too much memory in the game, and an oversized car can stream badly or vanish for other players. ModFiveM measures the car the way FiveM does and shrinks its textures until it fits.

The limits

FiveM measures each streamed file by how much memory it takes in the game, not by its size on disk. The server warns in steps:

Memory in the gameWhat FiveM does
0–16 MiBFine. No warning.
16–32 MiBNotice. FiveM mentions the file in the server console. Usually fine for one car, but it adds up over a whole car pack.
32–48 MiBWarning. FiveM warns about the file. Players with less memory may start to see streaming problems.
Over 48 MiBOversized. FiveM warns that oversized assets will lead to streaming problems. Other players may not see the car at all.

A .ytd that is a few MB on disk can take far more memory in the game. Some servers also limit the size of a file on disk, so check your server’s rules too.

Shrink the textures

  1. Open Textures. It shows how much memory the car’s texture files take in the game, coloured by FiveM’s limits, and every texture with the largest first.

  2. Choose the largest texture size (2048, 1024 or 512) and turn on removing textures no part of the car uses. The card shows roughly what the file will take afterwards.

  3. Export, and check the size in the server console when the resource starts.

ModFiveM halves textures larger than the size you chose until they fit, and keeps their smaller versions for distance (mipmaps). A texture that already holds the smaller size is cut down to it byte for byte, without compressing it again.

What is left alone

  • Textures under 128 pixels are left alone: they save too little to be worth it.

  • Numbered variants of a texture in use, liveries for example (_sign_2 and the like), count as used and are kept.

  • script_rt textures, which scripts draw on (screens and gauges), are never shrunk or compressed. The game needs them as they are.

Dica

Halving a texture’s sides makes it take a quarter of the memory. Shrinking the two or three biggest textures is often all a car needs.

When the model is too big

The .yft files count too. If a model is over the limit, smaller textures will not help: the model has too many polygons. Check says so, and a car like that needs a lighter model.
